If you have been following me, you probably know by now I enjoy working from coffee shops while sipping on a Cafe Americano. Years ago, when I started drinking coffee, I was drinking the sugary coffee drinks and quickly found out that I wasn’t going to work long-term being a diabetic. So I started drinking regular coffee with cream, and since then, I stick to black coffee or an Americano.
I came up with the idea for this post when I was in Oklahoma a few weeks ago drinking an Americano at Coffee Jerks. What is the history of Americano Coffee? Before I tell you the history of the Americano Coffee, let me explain what an Americano Coffee is for those that don’t know.
What is Americano Coffee?
It is an Espresso-based coffee with nothing added to it other than water; simply put, its a shot of Espresso with hot water poured on it. Today there are also iced versions of the Americano coffee that is also pretty good.
History of the Cafe Americano.
From what I can find researching the history of the Cafe Americano coffee, is it was first made during World War II by American soldiers in Europe. They didn’t particularly like the strong flavors of the espresso so they would pour hot water into the espresso to dilute it. Later this type of coffee became very popular in the United States.
An Americano is everything you love about drip coffee but is not burned or bitter from the drive-thru of a fast-food restaurant. It’s quick, relatively cheap, and it’s delicious. It’s almost like what coffee was meant to be. Next time your out getting a coffee from your favorite coffee shop, try their Cafe Americano and let me know what you think.
